Summerlicious: Museum Tavern

Prime rib cheeseburger and french fries

Every summer I try to go to at least one restaurant that is participating in Summerlicious (or Winterlicious in the winter), the semi-annual event where several Toronto restaurants offer special three-course prix-fixe menus. This time around I checked out Museum Tavern.

Spicy salmon and nori

The second-floor restaurant, located in Yorkville, has a pub-like vibe with a menu that definitely goes in line with the space. I ordered the grilled corn, tomato, feta and herb salad, fish & chips for my main course and the peach pot de crème for dessert, while Sean had spicy salmon & nori, prime rib cheeseburger for his main course and double chocolate cake for dessert. While I enjoyed the fish & chips, I was unimpressed with my salad, which was something I could have easily made at home and thought that my pot de crème lacked any peach flavour and the silky texture that traditional pot de crème is supposed to have. After eating my three dishes and tasting some of Sean's food, I figured out that what Museum Tavern does best is traditional, pub-style dishes like fish & chips and burgers. Any other food beyond bar food - including the salads - are subpar at best.

Despite the food not meeting my expectations, our service was great. Our server was quite friendly and attentive, without hovering too much. The table we were seated at was in a narrow corner but we managed to maneuver our wheelchairs so that we were seated comfortably. Overall, the restaurant was accessible. The only concern I had was when we arrived at the restaurant and noticed that it was on the second floor of an office building, but I quickly realized that you can get to the second floor restaurant using the elevators located in the office building.

With Summerlicious in its 15th year, it has become a integral part of Toronto's food scene. Love it or hate it, it's a great way for people to check out different restaurants in the city at a fraction of the price.

Summerlicious runs from now until July 22.
