Meal Kits: Goodfood

Pork & Peanut Noodle Stir Fry from Goodfood

Tasting Toronto on Wheels is featuring three popular meal kit companies. They are a good option not only for individuals with a busy lifestyle, but also for people with physical disabilities and seniors who may need assistance preparing meals or have difficulty grocery shopping. If you're looking to try one of the companies out, most of them offer discounts for the first week of delivery and have a straightforward cancellation policy if you want to end your subscription.

There are a few key elements I look for in a meal kit: quick and easy preparation and delicious recipes. I recently tried Goodfood to see how it compares to my experiences with Hello Fresh and Chefs Plate.

Goodfood allows you to choose between three meal plans: Classic Basket, Easy Prep Basket and Family Basket. Like Hello Fresh and Chefs Plate, there is no delivery charge and I received a 50% discount on my first week of meals.

The Classic Basket serves two or four people with two, three or four recipes for a total of $10.83 per serving ($9.83 for the vegetarian option). The Easy Prep Basket serves two or four people with two, three or four recipes for a total of $12.50 per serving ($13.99 for the low carb option). The Family Basket serves four people with two, three or four recipes for $9.75 per serving.

Like the previous two meal kits, I chose the Easy Prep Basket. The meals I picked were Pork & Peanut Noodle Stir Fry with Bok Choy & Sugar Snap Peas, Creamy 'Marsala' Mushroom Chicken Thighs Over Kale Orzo and Seared Pork with Broccoli Feta & Pistachio Salad & Long Grain Rice. It did not occur to me until a few days before our scheduled delivery date that I picked two pork dishes, but it did not bother me because I love pork.

Seared Pork from Goodfood

From the three meal kits I've tried, Goodfood's meals were the tastiest with my favourite dish being the creamy marsala mushroom chicken thighs (despite the recipe not actually including marsala wine). I also really enjoyed the pork & peanut noodle stir fry. All of the dishes were extremely flavourful.

Even though my overall experience with Goodfood went well, it wasn't without a few glitches. It took me about an hour to cook each meal rather than the 15-30 minute time frame given by Goodfood. I also ended up burning the rice for the seared pork dish, but I blame that on my inability to make rice on the stove.
