Jamaican patties from Crumbs Patties

Growing up in Brampton, Ontario, Jamaican patties were something I ate on a regular basis. You could buy them anywhere - the food court at the mall, grocery stores, convenience stores (which I don't recommend eating) to name a few. My high school even sold them in the cafeteria.

For the uninitiated, Jamaican patties are a flakey pastry typically filled with meat (chicken or beef) or vegetables. When I was a kid I always ate mild beef patties, but these days I'm all about the spice. If given a choice, hot Jamaican patties have a good kick to them but are not so spicy that it sets your mouth on fire.

When I moved to Toronto over a decade ago, one of the things I missed from home was a good Jamaican patty. I bought some from the grocery store a few times but it just wasn't the same. That's why when I recently stumbled on Crumbs Patties on the way to the Eaton Centre one day, I was ecstatic. The patties, which are made off-site, are perfectly spiced and the pastry is tender and not too flakey that it falls apart. After some convincing from the owner, I also tried the stuffed patties. They have two types of stuffed patties - one with lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise and mustard and one with cheese. I've had stuffed patties before and even after trying the ones at Crumbs, I still prefer a traditional, no frills patty. (Sorry Brampton folks!)

Unlike, Patties Express on Elm Street, Crumbs Patties is wheelchair accessible. The restaurant itself is strictly take-out, so there is no seating, which I'm okay with because Jamaican patties are the perfect food to eat on the go.

If you're looking for something quick to eat that's not a hamburger or pizza, I highly recommend checking out Crumbs Patties.
