Canadian Cheese Awards

Canadian Cheese of the Year Winner

I recently attended the Canadian Cheese Awards at Toronto's historic St. Lawrence Market. (Yes, there is an annual awards ceremony and subsequent gala and trade show dedicated to the world's favourite dairy product - cheese - and it was awesome!)

Before attending this event I did not realize how many different types of cheese Canada produces. 117 finalists out of 375 entries from all over Canada were selected by cheese experts in 33 categories. This year's Canadian Cheese of the Year went to Louis d'Or, an alpine-style cheese made by Jean Morin of Fromagerie due Presbytère in Sainte-Élizabeth-de-Warwick, Quebec. The winner is a firmer style cheese, with slightly nutty notes similar to a Gruyere cheese.

Despite my love to cheese, I am far from an expert. The award winners consisted not only of popular cheeses such as cheddar and mozzarella, but non-traditional cheeses like Comtomme (a semi-soft cheese) and Madelaine (a sheep's milk cheese) were also awarded.

Find a complete list of this year's winners here.
