When I normally think of diners I envision some dodgy, greasy spoon with jukeboxes blaring songs from the '50s, which is the sort of place I tend to avoid for fear of accidentally putting my hand in a wad of gum that was stuck under the table. My sticky table phobia was quickly squashed after I recently went to a diner that combines typical diner fare (i.e. hamburgers and poutine) with dare I say: sophistication. The Thompson Diner, located in Toronto's chic Thompson Hotel, is the perfect restaurant for those craving comfort food in a more sophisticated setting.
After hearing about how good the food is at the Thompson Diner for over a year, I finally mustered up the time to check it out and I was definitely impressed. Not only does the menu have standard items like omelets, pancakes and mac & cheese, it also caters to customers wanting something more substantial. For those looking to cure their hangover (or raise cholesterol levels), the menu features such items as "the Grilled Cheese Burger" (which are two grilled cheese sandwiches that surround a beef patty, bacon, lettuce and tomato), and "the Fat American" (which are bacon and sausage stuffed pancakes, topped with crispy onions and a fried egg). For purposes of this blog (and because I'm insane and possibly have a death wish), I ordered the aforementioned "Fat American," while I convinced to get "the Grilled Cheese Burger." As expected, both of these items were indigestion inducing monstrosities, but I kept justifying it to myself by saying "it's part of the experience." After attacking the beastly meal, I managed to eat less than half of it, while my boyfriend downed his greasy mess in record time, much to the surprise of the diner's servers.
Despite being located in one of the trendiest (and nicest) hotels in the city, the Thompson Diner's food is decently priced with menu items less than $20. Overall, the staff were pleasant and attentive, and since the restaurant is located in a hotel, there are no accessibility problems.
