Tips: Things to Remember Before Going to a Restaurant for the First Time If You Have a Physical Disa

There are a few things to keep in mind if you have a physical disability and planning to go to a restaurant for the first time. Here are some tips to help you have an enjoyable restaurant experience:

  • Never assume that a restaurant is wheelchair accessible.

  • Call the restaurant and ask an employee (preferably a manager) if the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.

  • Let them know that you are in a wheelchair. (If you use a power wheelchair you need to specify that.)

  • Ask if there is a ramp at the entrance.

  • Make sure that there is no curb at the entrance.

  • Ask if they have automatic door buttons at the entrance and washrooms.

  • Find out if they have a wheelchair accessible washroom, which includes either a stall that is large enough to fit a wheelchair OR a private washroom with grab bars and a raised sink.

  • To ensure there are no surprises to the restaurant staff, always make a reservation in advance.

  • Look for restaurant vouchers/coupons (i.e. Groupon.com) to lower food costs.
