There are a few things to keep in mind if you have a physical disability and planning to go to a restaurant for the first time. Here are some tips to help you have an enjoyable restaurant experience:
Never assume that a restaurant is wheelchair accessible.
Call the restaurant and ask an employee (preferably a manager) if the restaurant is wheelchair accessible.
Let them know that you are in a wheelchair. (If you use a power wheelchair you need to specify that.)
Ask if there is a ramp at the entrance.
Make sure that there is no curb at the entrance.
Ask if they have automatic door buttons at the entrance and washrooms.
Find out if they have a wheelchair accessible washroom, which includes either a stall that is large enough to fit a wheelchair OR a private washroom with grab bars and a raised sink.
To ensure there are no surprises to the restaurant staff, always make a reservation in advance.
Look for restaurant vouchers/coupons (i.e. Groupon.com) to lower food costs.
